The overarching tip is to be more mindful and intentional in your work.  Simply take a moment to think through the impact of your behavior – you’d be surprised how many simple and easy things can be done to make your lab more sustainable.

 

Turn off lights and equipment when not in use

 

If you have -80C freezers, adjust the set point to -70C instead

 

Eliminate single pass cooling (this is often used in chemistry experiments as a way to cool down a reaction)

 

Install aerators on faucets

 

Use vendor take-back programs for Styrofoam, water filter cartridges, equipment, etc

 

Close fume hood sashes

 

If your organization offers recycling for lab materials, recycle!
